Parashat Tezaveh
Spreading Sanctity Throughout the World
Our parasha deals almost entirely with the Kohanim (Priests), – their vestments and their preparation for the priestly service. The Gemara, in Nedarim (35:) (and in Kiddushin 23:), raises the issue of the disagreement regarding the role of the Kohanim, are they the emissaries of the Jewish people or emissaries of Hashem.
What is the significance of this disagreement? Those who claim that the Kohanim are the emissaries of the Jewish people think that even though man wants to come close to Hashem, he is unable to accomplish this on his own. The Kohen, who is situated on a higher spiritual level, can be man’s emissary, helping him to come closer to Hashem and atone for his sins. On the other hand, those who think that the Kohanim are the emissaries of Hashem, believe that Hashem wants to have His Divine Presence dwell within the Jewish nation; he Kohanim help accomplish this through their priestly service in the Holy Temple.
However, Harav Aharon Lichtenstein, shlita, our teacher and Rav, added an additional stratum. There is a fundamental disagreement here regarding the purpose of having Hashem’s Divine Presence dwell among within the Jewish people. Is the purpose to sanctify the Jewish nation or is it, perhaps, to spread Hashem’s sanctity throughout the world? If the purpose is the sanctification of the Jewish people, then the Kohanim are our emissaries, helping us to sanctify ourselves. Perhaps everything emanates from Hashem’s desire to create sanctity in the world, helping Hashem’s sanctity to spread everywhere, and if so, then the Kohanim are emissaries of Hashem to fulfill that mission.
Harav explained that it is this issue which stands behind the question of whether it is referring to the dwelling of Hashem’s Presence in the Holy Temple or in the entire world.
What is the purpose of the Tabernacle?
The Rambam (Maimonides) in the beginning of Hilchot Bet Habechira. Chapter 1, Halacha1 writes:
It is a positive commandment to build a House for Hashem which is ready for sacrificing offerings.
In other words, the purpose of the Tabernacle and the Holy Temple is to sacrifice offerings.
In our parasha (29:45-46), the Torah discusses the dwelling of the Divine Presence within the Jewish people:
And I dwell among the children of Israel, and I will be their G-d:
And they will know that I am Hashem, their G-d, who took them out of the land of Egypt to dwell among them, I am Hashem, their G-d:
The Pessikta, (Pessikta Zutrata, Medrash Lekach Tov, Ibid) explains that the purpose of the exodus from Egypt is the dwelling of the Divine Presence within the Jewish people:
“And they will know that I am Hashem, their G-d, who took them out of the land of Egypt” in order “to dwell among them”.
Thus Rashi. also interpreted “to have His Presence dwell among them to mean – “in order that I will dwell among them”.
That is to say, that the purpose of the Holy Temple is the dwelling of the Divine Presence within the Jewish people.
The Ibn Ezra, and following his example, the Ramban (Nachmanides) proceeded along a similar path but gave a different explanation:
“to have My Presence dwell among them” to mean – “in order that I will dwell among them”. Rashi’s words…
But Rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra explained the verse to mean that the purpose of my taking them out of the land of Egypt was only so that I would have My Presence dwell among them. And this was the fulfillment of the promise to Moshe “You should serve Hashem upon this mountain” (Shemot 3:12). He explained it well, and if it is so, there is a great secret in this matter. For in the plain sense of things it would appear that the dwelling of the Divine Presence among the Jewish people was to fulfill a need from below, but it is not so. It fulfilled a need from above, being rather similar in thought to that which the Scriptures states, “Israel, in whom I will be glorified” (Yeshayahu 49:3). And Yehoshua said, “And what will You do for Your great name”(Yehoshua 7:9). There are many verses which express this thought: “He has desired it for His habitation,” (Tehillim 132:13). “Here I dwell, for I have desired it” (Tehillim Ibid:14). And it is written, “And I will remember the land” (Vayikra 26:42).
The Ramban explains that the purpose of the Holy Temple and the Tabernacle is not for the need of the Jewish nation, it s not even for the dwelling of the Divine Presence among the Jewish people, but it has an exalted purpose: it is Hashem’s need that His Divine Presence be spread throughout the world.
It is obvious that Hashem does not have any personal needs, rather, the G-dly purpose is to infuse worldliness with sanctity. Hashem – is entirely Holy. He needs the human being who is shaped from substance to take Hashem’s sanctity and spread it throughout the world. The final goal is not the Jewish people, but rather the spreading of sanctity throughout the world with the Jewish people implementing this spreading.
We have a monumental goal – to be Holy. However, there is an additional goal: to sanctify the world, to visualize the great goals of the world, to exist not only to actualize our own selves, not even to make ourselves Holy, rather to spread Hashem’s sovereignty over the world, and His holiness and goodness throughout the world.
